Who are Dermalogica?

Dermalogica – The History

Dermalogica was started in 1986. It now boasts over 100,000 Dermalogica qualified therapists worldwide in 80+ countries and has won over 300 awards in the industry.
education first

While the Dermalogica story begins in 1986, the force of change in the industry started in Los Angeles, circa 1983. Jane Wurwand, a tenured, United Kingdom-trained skin therapist new to the American “esthetician” industry, recognised that continuing skin and body therapy education was practically non-existent in the United States. While her training had been comprehensive and serious, US students entered the industry licensed yet under-trained, and worse, under-respected.

Jane put her education in action, opening a small classroom in Marina del Rey, California under the name The International Dermal Institute (IDI). She invited licensed skin therapists to get hands-on with the postgraduate training so critical to making them competitive in the business. Today, IDI is considered the international gold-standard for postgraduate skin and body therapy training with 37 locations worldwide.

dermalogica is born

While teaching at IDI, it didn’t take long for Jane to realize no product line embraced her belief of skin health as opposed to “beauty,” so she developed her own. And in 1986, Dermalogica was born. The vision was clear – a product line free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts (including lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colors and fragrances) that would improve skin health, and were only available from qualified skin care professionals trained at The International Dermal Institute.

Every Dermalogica product is manufactured in the USA and available for purchase from qualified skin therapists

our commitment to sustainability

Dermalogica has been redefining skin health for more than 30 years and is trusted by skin professionals and consumers in more than 106 countries around the world

Proud of our animal anti-cruelty heritage, we are recognised by PETA and Leaping Bunny. We are working towards being completely vegan and are nearly there with only four products left to renovate. Wondering about our environmental ethics and sustainability policies? We are committed to be 90% recyclable or biodegradable by 2020. Most of our primary packaging including tubes, bottles, pumps and caps are already recyclable. Our cartons are recyclable and biodegradable, and all Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified for forest sustainability. In addition, we support the “Green Dot” programme in Europe to facilitate the recovery and recycling of packaging materials. Making better decisions for our environment is everyone’s responsibility, and Dermalogica is taking proactive action.

The original ‘clean’ brand Dermalogica became known for what we left out. Today we continue this mission and ensure we only select ingredients that promote skin health. All Dermalogica products are free of common irritants including artificial fragrances, artificial colours, lanolin, SD alcohols and formaldehyde donors. Our UltraCalming line has been specifically formulated to combat redness, restore natural barrier defences and relieve even the most sensitive skins. All Dermalogica products are also gluten free.

If you struggle with breakouts you can have confidence with our products because all Dermalogica products are non-comedogenic. Since 1986 we have been redefining skin care by choosing to leave out ingredients that promote breakouts and clogging. Dermalogica is free from mineral oils, lanolin, artificial colours, oils with high comedogenicity ratings, SD alcohols and packaging that could cause contamination. Our Clear Start line is developed for young adults experiencing breakouts and oily skin, whilst our MediBac Clearing line is specifically formulated for breakout prone adults. Developed to support your skin health at every stage of life, all products, except our retinol formulas, are safe for use during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding we recommend consulting a physician before using Overnight Retinol Repair 0.5%, Overnight Retinol Repair 1%, Age Reversal Eye Complex or Multivitamin Power Serum as these products contain retinol or retinol derivatives and are generally not advised.

We are recognized cruelty-free by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and Leaping Bunny

We are certified vegan on all but 4 of our products.

We have been clean since 1986. Our formulas are free of artificial colors and fragrances, mineral oil, lanolin, S.D. alcohol, parabens and microplastics.

By the end of 2020, 90% of our packaging will be recyclable or bio-degradable. Much of our packaging is already sustainable.

Going forward, all paper and cartons we use are FSC certified to be sustainable for forests.

Our formulae are all manufactured in California, which boasts some of the world’s strongest environmental and consumer protections.
